Overview

Overview

Corporate responsibility (CR) is central to the way we do business. Acting responsibly creates value for our brands while helping our hotels to manage costs, drive revenue and be prepared for the future. It also keeps us in tune with the thinking of our stakeholders, and supports our mission to champion and protect IHG’s trusted reputation. Doing the right thing reinforces trust in our brands, builds competitive advantage and strengthens our corporate reputation.

With over 4,500 hotels worldwide and over 1,200 in the pipeline, we have a tremendous opportunity to help make tourism responsible, from the energy we use to the economic opportunities we create in the communities where we operate. We work to achieve this by treating CR as a strategic business issue, and an integral part of our vision to become one of the world’s great companies through our core purpose, Great Hotels Guests Love.

Our Approach: creating shared value

We focus our innovation and collaboration activities on the areas that make most sense to our business, and where we believe we can make most difference, the Environment and Community, and in turn create shared value. We believe that there is real competitive advantage in acting responsible, which is playing a key role in our efforts to manage costs and drive revenue more effectively. Our CR strategy has two pillars:

  • Environment - driving environmental sustainability through Green Engage and our three-year target to reduce energy consumption in our owned and managed estate by between 6 and 10% by the end of 2012.
  • Community - creating local economic opportunity particularly through the IHG Academy, and by providing disaster relieve through the IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme.

What is Green Engage?

Green Engage

Green Engage is our comprehensive online sustainability system and almost 2000 IHG hotels are already signed up. The in house programme tells our hotels what they can do to be a 'green' hotel and gives them the means to conserve resources and save money - by measuring, managing and reporting on their hotel energy, water and waste consumption, as well as benchmarking and the ability to create action plans to track progress. In 2011 Green Engage became aligned to LEED making us the first hotel company to have an existing hotel programme aligned.

IHG Academy - creating local economic opportunities

The IHG Academy is a programme in which IHG hotels ally with community and educational institutions to give people real-world hospitality knowledge. This raises job skills and creates economic opportunity around our hotels while creating a pipeline of prepared and engaged potential recruits. Big companies do big things. There is a multiplier effect which takes place when a large group of people focuses its efforts on the same goal. Together we can make a big difference.

IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme - providing disaster relief

care logo

When natural and man-made disasters strike, people naturally come to hotels to seek shelter in a storm. This is a key role of hotels in society, and one that is vitally important to the communities in which they operate. The IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme provides our hotels with guidance on when and how to react to disasters. It means we are able to respond quickly and effectively to crises affecting IHG branded hotels, their employees and the local community .A key element of our disaster response is the IHG Shelter Fund. This is built up through fundraising activities in our hotels and corporate offices throughout the year and enables us to respond as soon as disaster strikes (instead of waiting to raise funds after the fact) and provide vital assistance right away.

Working Partnership

Our global partnership with CARE allows us to draw on its deep expertise in humanitarian assistance and provides a channel for us to direct funds to help local communities. If a disaster strikes where CARE does not have resources on the ground it will guide us to the best local partners, making sure we can get help to where it is needed.
